Get Ahead. Stay Ahead.

The Staying Ahead of the Game!, LLC College Orientation Program is designed to help incoming freshman make the transition to college life through in-classroom instruction and individual coaching. Our coaches work hand-in-hand with students to lay the foundation for a successful college career. At Staying Ahead of the Game!, LLC we address the need for an important set of life skills in order to make our College Orientation Program participants thrive in a rigorous university setting. The four-phased College Orientation Program instills the importance of organization, time management, study skills, and impression management through both classroom instruction and one-on-one assistance.

The first phase is organization. Coaches work one-on-one with students to assess their current methods of organization and implement a personalized organizational system that works with their individual needs. In the College Orientation Program, our coaches take the time to personally assist each student to identify his/her specific requirements for each class and to ensure that the system addresses these requirements. Coaches and students arrange the students’ dorm rooms to ensure all materials (desks, bookshelves, closets, etc.) are easily accessible and well organized.

The second phase is time management. Coaches teach students how to properly use a homework planner and how to effectively plan for homework, exams, projects, and papers. Each student enrolled in the College Orientation Program will receive help juggling academic and extra-curricular activities, as well as advice on how to break up large assignments into more manageable chunks. Additionally, our coaches dedicate time to working one-on-one with students to develop a daily routine, based on students’ individual schedules, to productively utilize daytime hours. Coaches advise students on the responsibilities of living away from home and the importance of autonomy in the face of less structure.

The third phase is study skills. Coaches teach students how to study for tests in all subject areas, as well as strategies for taking objective and subjective exams. Students learn memorization strategies, proper reading techniques, and how to properly prepare for research papers and other long term assignments. Our College Orientation Program is designed to help students tackle college level coursework and the new challenges of collegiate life. Too many students spend their second, third, and fourth year of college bringing up their GPA from freshman year.

The fourth phase is impression management. Coaches teach students the value of building relationships and how to utilize their teachers, counselors, advisors, campus resources, peers, etc., to maximize their success. We emphasize the value of networking and becoming involved in clubs and activities. When in one-on-one sessions, coaches assist students with resume building and internship applications. We help students present themselves as confident young adults and adjust to life away from home.
